Retreat Director: Fr. Jeff Putthoff
Fr. Jeff Putthoff, SJ, has been a Jesuit for more than 30 years and has directed over 60 retreats nationally, both preached and individually directed. He has worked in Camden, NJ for more than 15 years and is the founder and Executive Director of Hopeworks ‘N Camden, a youth technology portal using the technologies of website design/development and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to work with youth ages 14-23. Hopeworks is a direct response to the current youth crisis that exists for many youth today. In Camden, over 50% of the population is under 18, and only 25% of adults have a high school diploma and the per capita income is $5700. There is an estimated 70% dropout rate from the public high schools in the city of Camden, while 53% of all youth live below the poverty line. These factors combine to make life challenging for young people, especially when Camden is one of America’s poorest and most violent cities. Hopeworks is a direct response to this situation.
During the past 12 years, Hopeworks has worked with over 1700 youth, providing 300 youth jobs, 1700 college credits, and helped over 140 youth begin college. Fr. Jeff has been recognized for his youth development work. People often assume he does this work because it is what “Jesuits do;” however, he finds Jesus alive there. It is a place where his relationship with Jesus has grown—not always in a linear and understood way. Living and working in such poverty with its accompanying violence, trauma, and abuse challenges his sense of justice. He doesn’t find easy answers, nor is God readily giving him platitudes. Rather, he finds himself often with the crucified Christ in Camden. As a Jesuit, he has asked to be close to Jesus, especially in His sufferings, and truly understood that after he began working in Camden.
