I Love You!

May 18, 2017 – Thursday of the Fifth Week of Easter

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.  Alleluia!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to John (15:9-11)

Jesus said to his disciples:
“As the Father loves me, so I also love you.
Remain in my love.

If you keep my commandments, you will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my Father’s commandments
and remain in his love.

“I have told you this so that
my joy might be in you and
your joy might be complete.”

Reflect: As the Father loves me, so I also love you. Jesus loves us! God loves you and me! To hear that, to know that should be a source of great joy: “I have told you this so that my joy might be in you and your joy might be complete.” So knowing that we are loved with an incomparable love, we may want to remain in that love always.  Jesus shows us how it can be done: by keeping his commandments. We know the Ten Commandments, but Jesus makes it even simpler. He gives us two commandments in summary of all the others: Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, mind, soul and all your being; and love your neighbor as yourself.  We are lavishly given an incomparable love that we don’t deserve – a love that is the source of everything that we are. In turn, Jesus asks that we love him, that we love our God; and that we love our neighbor – without counting the cost. Like any relationship, love and friendship go stale and wither away if we don’t invest anything into it. Maybe we’ll be inspired to hum or sing a old tune today: I’ve got his love, love, love, love, deep in my heart; I’ve got his joy, joy, joy, joy, deep in my heart – today!

Questions: Where is wanting God’s love on my list of priorities? If I feel that I’ve “fallen out of love” with God, how might I find my way back? If I feel God’s love and presence, how might I remain in the fullness of his love and joy? Does it give me joy to love God and my neighbor? What have I tried lately to make that happen?

Pray: Loving God, I don’t deserve your love yet you love me anyway. Help me to be unrestrained in returning your love, in giving you the most special place in my life; and help me to love my neighbor without reserve.  I pray this in the powerful and perfect name of Jesus. Amen.

Christ died for all, that those who live may live no longer for themselves, but for him who died for them and is risen.  Alleluia!
