September Eighth, The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

“We know that all things work unto good for those who love God”

First Reading: Romans 8:28-30

We know that all things work for good for those who love God,
who are called according to his purpose.
For those he foreknew he also predestined
to be conformed to the image of his Son,
so that he might be the firstborn
among many brothers.
And those he predestined he also called;
and those he called he also justified;
and those he justified he also glorified.

The Word of the Lord

Reflect: When we are very young birthdays are eagerly anticipated.  As we age, they become less so for many of us.  When we celebrate the birthday of a loved one, it is much less about the number of years and more about the gift that life is to us.  The Church celebrates only three birthdays in the Liturgical calendar.   Today we celebrate a life through whom we receive the fullness of life and salvation.  Our celebration of this day should be as great if not greater than that of any other human being.

Questions: It is customary to give gifts to the one whose birthday we celebrate.  What gift would please our Blessed mother to receive from you today? (If you are unsure, ask Her Son.  He will surely know.)  How else might her birthday be celebrated?

PrayImpart to Your servants, we pray, O Lord, the gift of heavenly grace, that the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin may bring deeper peace to those for whom the birth of her Son was the dawning of salvation.  Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.  Amen.

Holy Mary, Mother of God pray for us…

“Let us celebrate with joy the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary”
