Speaker

Phil Martelli

Phil Martelli has been presented numerous opportunities through basketball to impact lives. His mantra “Make A Difference” goes well beyond his esteemed coaching career at Saint Joseph’s University and the University of Michigan. Martelli spent 34 years at Saint Joseph’s starting as an assistant for 10 years before taking over as the head coach for 24 years. His accomplishments are incredible.

Martelli’s dedication to the profession in leadership roles has been a staple of his career. He was a member of the Board of Directors, National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), and he served as its President in 2014. Phil was also Chair of the Coaches vs Cancer Council for 12 years, and he was the founder of the Philadelphia Chapter. Nationally acclaimed for his leadership and communication skills, Phil has received many awards including four honorary degrees from colleges in the Delaware Valley region, his alma mater Widener University among them. This past September, after his return to the Philadelphia area from his time in Ann Arbor; Phil received the Philadelphia Legacies Portrait & Community Award and has been inducted into the Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame.

The Martelli family has basketball in its blood. Phil draws the spotlight for his achievements on Hawk Hill, but his wife, Judy Marra Martelli, is the Martelli in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Judy won three straight national championships at Immaculata from 1972 to 1974, and, in 2014, she was inducted along with her Mighty Macs teammates. Son Phil Jr. is the head coach of the Bryant University men’s basketball team, and son Jimmy is the assistant coach on the Penn State University men’s basketball team.

Phil is a devote Catholic and an active member of Saint Mary Magdalen Parish in Media, PA.
