Malvern Retreat House Honors Mary Throughout May
May 10, 2024
For Catholics the world over, May has a special meaning as we take time to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. Malvern Retreat House not only honors Mary, but all women, mothers and families throughout the month of May.
The longstanding tradition of honoring Mary in May is rooted in Catholic history and theology. The Catholic devotion to Mary began to flourish in Medieval Europe allowing Catholics to express a special dedication to our Mother. Likely, May was chosen because spring is a time of renewal, rebirth and beauty. This is an ideal month to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Today, we honor Mary with special events like the May Procession, the Crowning of Mary and with special hymns at Mass like, “Hail Mary, Quiet Woman.”
Mary is particularly important for Catholics. She has a unique place in salvation history as the “theotokos” or “God Bearer.” She serves as a crucial model for for all Christians as Mary’s resounding “yes” to God’s call inspires us to do the same.
Malvern Retreat House has a special devotion to Our Lady, Mary. Our beautiful grounds are filled with statues that honor the Blessed Virgin. But our retreat programs also reflect our special dedication to Mary. This month, we are hosting Fr. Chris Alar, MIC who will be giving a retreat on the Blessed Virgin.
Honoring Mary in May is a cherished tradition in the Catholic Church. In May, we can express, in a special way, our gratitude for Mary’s “yes” to God’s call. She is a model of humble service that has inspired Christians since the beginning of the Church.
