The Feast of the Assumption and the Start of “Little Lent”
August 15, 2024
Celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Catholics around the world celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on August 15. This feast day commemorates the reality that the Blessed Virgin Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. This feast, which has been observed since the earliest days of the Church, reminds us of Mary’s important role in the salvation story.
The Feast of the Assumption reminds us of Mary’s resounding “yes!” to God’s call. It is a day of joy and reverence. The feast highlights Mary’s purity, holiness, and the unique grace she received from God. Catholics throughout the world celebrate the Feast of the Assumption with Mass, processions, and other community celebrations.
The Tradition of “Little Lent”
Have you ever heard of Little Lent? The tradition of Little Lent was started by St. Francis of Assisi who identified five periods of fasting and prayer throughout the year. It is no surprise that we owe this tradition to St. Francis who is known for his strong desire to imitate Christ by living life in simplicity and poverty.
Following the Feast of the Assumption, we enter into St. Michael’s Lent. These forty days are marked by prayer, repentance, and sacrifice end with the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel on September 29. In particular, St. Francis sought to deepen his relationship with God and prepare his soul for battles against evil that St. Michael symbolizes. By entering into the Little Lent of St. Michael, we, too, can prepare ourselves to battle evil.
Observing Little Lent Today
The tradition of observing Little Lent is a powerful opportunity for spiritual growth and renewal. During this time, Catholics are encouraged to adopt practices of fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, similar to the forty days prior to Easter.
Little Lent offers a chance to reflect on the message of the Assumption—the ultimate victory of good over evil and the promise of eternal life. It is a time to seek Mary’s intercession and strength as we strive to overcome the challenges of daily life and grow closer to God.
As we journey through Little Lent, culminating in the Feast of St. Michael the Archangel, we are reminded of the ongoing spiritual battle we face and the protection and guidance offered by St. Michael, Mary, and all the saints. By embracing this tradition, we can enrich our spiritual lives, deepen our faith, and prepare ourselves for the final victory over sin and death.
